A visual field test, also called perimetry, maps your side and central vision. It can show glaucoma or optic nerve damage before you notice any change. Dr Shibal Bhartiya interprets your result at her Glaucoma Clinic at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Sector 56, Gurugram.
What happens during the test
You sit at the perimeter and cover one eye. You press a button each time you see a small light. Most tests take 4 to 6 minutes per eye. The test comes before any dilating drops. Dr Bhartiya reviews the result with you in the same visit.

Which perimeters we use
| Perimeter | How it works | Average time per eye |
|---|---|---|
| Humphrey Field Analyzer (HVF / Zeiss) | Standard 24-2 test using Swedish Interactive Thresholding Algorithm (SITA Standard / SITA Fast / SITA Faster) | • SITA Standard: ~5 – 7 min • SITA Fast: ~3 – 4.5 min • SITA Faster: ~2 – 3 min |
| Octopus 600 (Haag-Streit) | Standard 24-2 test with Dynamic thresholding | About 5.7 minutes* |
| Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF) | Browser-based 24-2 test with eccentricity-scaled stimuli and Hindi voice prompts | About 3.9 minutes* |
*These times come from our own recently published study of 113 patients.
Why your perimeter matters
Dr Bhartiya co-authored a 2026 study comparing MRF with Octopus 600 at Marengo Asia Hospitals. Mean deviation agreed strongly between the two (ICC 0.88). MRF finished about 1.8 minutes faster per eye. Individual results still differed. The two perimeters are not interchangeable.
So we track your field on the same perimeter at each visit. Most patients in the study had mild disease, so the findings apply best to early glaucoma.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get a perimetry test in Gurgaon?
Dr Bhartiya sees patients at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Sector 56, Gurugram. The Ophthalmology Department runs the test.
Do I need dilating drops first?
No. We test before dilation, because dilated pupils can blur the result.
How long does a visual field test take?
Plan on about 20 minutes, including time taken to learn how to use the machine. A full glaucoma evaluation with imaging takes longer.
Can I use a report from another centre?
Please bring it. Perimeters differ, so, if required, we may repeat the test on ours to set a baseline.
Is MRF as accurate as Octopus?
In our study, mean deviation agreed strongly. Individual results differed, so we do not swap perimeters between visits.
