Can Carrots Improve Vision or Remove Glasses

Dr Shibal Bhartiya Gurugram explains carrots eyesight glasses myth

No, eating carrots cannot improve vision or remove glasses. Carrots support general eye health because of their vitamin A content, but they cannot correct myopia, hypermetropia, or astigmatism, and they cannot reduce an existing glasses prescription. Vitamin A supports genuine eye health but cannot correct refractive error. Glasses power is a structural feature of the eye, not a nutritional deficiency.

Eating carrots will not make glasses go away. Carrots support eye health through vitamin A but do not reduce or remove glasses power. Glasses power depends on the eyeball’s shape and length, which diet does not change once established. Vitamin A prevents specific deficiency-related eye problems, not refractive error.

Why This Belief Persists that Carrots Improve Vision or Remove Glasses

This myth has a genuinely factual origin, which is part of why it has lasted so long. Vitamin A is essential for the retina, and severe vitamin A deficiency causes real, well-documented eye damage, including night blindness. During World War II, British propaganda credited pilots’ night vision to eating carrots, partly to disguise early radar technology, and the story of carrots as a vision booster spread widely and stuck. Over decades, “carrots are good for your eyes” quietly became “carrots fix your eyesight,” which is a very different claim.

What The Science Actually Says about Carrots and Eye Health

Vitamin A, found in carrots as beta-carotene, is essential for the light-sensing cells in the retina to function properly. In populations with genuine vitamin A deficiency, correcting that deficiency does measurably improve vision and prevent conditions like night blindness and corneal damage. This is real and important, particularly in regions where deficiency is common.

However, glasses power comes from a completely different mechanism. Myopia, the most common reason for glasses in children, occurs because the eyeball is slightly longer than its focusing system can accommodate, so light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This structural mismatch is influenced by genetics and by visual environment, particularly the balance of near-work and outdoor time. No nutrient, including vitamin A, changes the physical length of the eyeball once it has developed. A person with completely adequate vitamin A levels, eating carrots daily, will still need the same glasses power, because there is no deficiency to correct.

In short, carrots can prevent a specific kind of nutritional eye damage, but they cannot reverse a structural refractive error. These are two unrelated categories of eye problems, and conflating them is the core of this myth.

What Actually Helps

  • Eat a balanced diet including vitamin A-rich foods for general eye health, not as a glasses cure
  • Get an annual eye check to track glasses power accurately over time
  • Encourage outdoor time, which has real evidence for slowing myopia progression in children
  • Wear the correct glasses prescription consistently rather than skipping it while waiting for diet to help
  • Ask your doctor about medically proven myopia control options if progression is a concern

When To See a Doctor

  • Glasses power increasing at each yearly check despite a healthy diet
  • Night vision that seems unusually poor, which may signal a genuine deficiency or other condition
  • Squinting, headaches, or sitting close to screens or books
  • A family history of high myopia or eye disease
  • No eye check in the last 12 months

Frequently Asked Questions

Can eating more carrots reduce an existing glasses power?

No. Glasses power reflects the eye’s physical shape, not vitamin A levels, so increasing carrot intake will not reduce an existing prescription.

Is there any real vision benefit to eating carrots?

Yes, in the context of preventing vitamin A deficiency, which can cause night blindness and other retinal problems. This benefit does not extend to correcting refractive errors like myopia.

Where did the idea that carrots dramatically improve eyesight come from?

It traces partly to wartime propaganda crediting pilots’ night vision to carrots, which spread as popular belief over subsequent decades. The genuine link between vitamin A and eye health got exaggerated into a general vision-improvement claim.
