Quick Answer: Alcohol can blur vision and dry your eyes for hours, and heavy long-term drinking can damage the optic nerve. Illicit liquor with methanol can cause permanent blindness, so seek emergency care at once if you drink it.
Most people know alcohol harms the liver. Fewer know what it does to the eyes. Some effects fade by morning. Others build over years. Here is what I tell my patients.

What Happens to Your Eyes While You Drink?
| What you notice | Why it happens | When to worry |
|---|---|---|
| Red, bloodshot eyes | Alcohol widens blood vessels on the eye surface | Pain, discharge or redness that lasts beyond a day |
| Dry, gritty eyes | Dehydration and poor sleep dry the tear film | Dryness that lasts for days |
| Blurred vision | Alcohol slows focusing and eye movement control | Blur that persists once you are sober |
| Double vision | The two eyes coordinate poorly | Double vision that lasts after you sober up |
| Glare and halos at night | The pupils react slowly to light | Any impairment while driving |
| Narrow field, weak depth and contrast | The brain processes visual signals more slowly | Any impairment while driving |
| Eyelid twitching | Alcohol, poor sleep, stress and caffeine can all trigger it | Twitching beyond a few weeks, or spreading to the face |
Glare, slow pupils and poor depth perception make night driving dangerous. Do not drive after drinking. Read more about vision and road safety.
Can Long-Term Drinking Damage Your Eyes?
Optic Nerve Damage
Heavy, long-term drinking can damage the optic nerve. This is worse with smoking and poor diet. Doctors once called it tobacco-alcohol amblyopia. Today we call it nutritional or toxic optic neuropathy.
It causes slow, painless blurring in both eyes. Colours look dull, and a blind spot may form near the centre of vision. Deficiency of B vitamins and folate plays a part. Caught early, stopping alcohol and correcting nutrition can improve vision. Late cases leave permanent loss.
Thiamine Deficiency and Eye Movements
Severe thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency in heavy drinkers can cause Wernicke encephalopathy. It brings double vision, jerky eye movements and confusion. It is an emergency.
Cataract
Studies link heavy drinking to a higher risk of cataract. Smoking adds to the risk.
Diabetes and Blood Pressure
Alcohol can worsen blood sugar and blood pressure control. Both damage the eye’s small blood vessels. Diabetic eye disease and bleeding in the retina can follow.
Glaucoma
A single drink may lower eye pressure briefly. Regular drinking, however, links to slightly higher pressure. A 2022 review of 11 studies and 173,058 people found about 18 percent higher risk of open-angle glaucoma with any alcohol use.
The evidence was very low in certainty and the effect small. If you have glaucoma, you do not need to give up alcohol for your eyes alone. Keep intake low and never skip your drops because you drank. Read more on glaucoma and diet.

Methanol: A Real Danger With Illicit Liquor
Illicit or homemade liquor can contain methanol. It damages the optic nerve, can blind you for life and can kill. You cannot detect it by taste or smell.
Symptoms can start hours to a day or two after drinking. Look for blurred or dim vision, a “snowfield” look, nausea, belly pain and drowsiness. Go to an emergency room at once. Early treatment can save both sight and life.
Note: The social and economic underpinnings of the methanol poisoning crisis must be actively and urgently explored and managed as vigorously as its toxicologic and pathophysiologic components.
What Doctors Often Miss
- Slow, painless blurring in a regular drinker needs an optic nerve check. Ask about B vitamin and folate levels too.
- Not every red eye is a hangover. Pain, light sensitivity or reduced vision needs an exam.
- Diet matters as much as the drink. Heavy drinkers often eat poorly, and nutritional gaps drive optic nerve damage.
- Take your contact lenses out before sleep, even when tipsy. Sleeping in lenses raises infection risk.
When to See a Doctor
See a Doctor Urgently
Seek same-day care for any of these:
- Blurred or dim vision after drinking illicit or homemade liquor
- Sudden loss of vision
- Double vision, jerky eye movements or confusion in a heavy drinker
- Severe eye pain, or a red eye with reduced vision
See a Doctor
Book an eye check if:
- Your vision blurs slowly and painlessly in both eyes
- Colours look duller than before
- Eyelid twitching lasts more than a few weeks
- Dry, gritty eyes persist
- You drink regularly and have diabetes, high blood pressure or glaucoma

What This Means for You
A drink now and then rarely causes lasting eye harm. Heavy or long-term drinking can damage the optic nerve, the lens and the blood vessels. Illicit liquor can blind you within days. If you drink often and notice slow, painless blurring, see an eye doctor early. Early treatment can restore vision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my eyes get red after drinking alcohol?
Alcohol widens the blood vessels on the eye surface, so the eyes look bloodshot. Dehydration and poor sleep add to the redness. It usually fades within a day. See a doctor if you have pain, discharge or blurred vision.
Can alcohol cause permanent vision loss?
Yes. Methanol in illicit liquor can cause permanent blindness. Heavy long-term drinking can cause nutritional optic neuropathy. Caught early, that condition can improve with better nutrition and no alcohol.
Does alcohol cause glaucoma?
Alcohol has not been proven to cause glaucoma. A 2022 review found a small link between regular drinking and open-angle glaucoma, but the evidence was weak. Keep intake low and keep your follow-up visits.
Can alcohol cause eyelid twitching?
It can trigger it, as can stress, poor sleep and caffeine. Most twitching is harmless and settles. See a doctor if it lasts more than a few weeks or spreads to other parts of the face.
Why do I see double when I drink?
Alcohol impairs the coordination of the eye muscles, so the two eyes stop working together. This clears once you sober up. Double vision that persists, or comes with confusion or unsteady walking, needs urgent care.
