Who is Dr Shibal Bhartiya?
Dr Shibal Bhartiya (she/her) is a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist and the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Sector 56, Gurugram, Haryana, India. She has over 25 years of clinical experience in glaucoma diagnosis, glaucoma surgery, and neuro-ophthalmology. She is also Program Director of the Marengo Asia International Institute of Neuro and Spine.
She is a Mayo Clinic Research Collaborator and holds active editorial leadership positions in peer-reviewed ophthalmology publishing.
Dr Shibal Bhartiya is a glaucoma specialist focused on early detection, second opinions, and long-term management of glaucoma. Dr Bhartiya’s clinical approach is built around the recognition that glaucoma is frequently missed in routine care and that patients may retain clear vision despite ongoing damage. She integrates clinical evaluation with imaging and functional testing to identify disease earlier and manage progression with a structured, risk-based approach.
Her approach also recognises that Indians are at disproportionately higher risk of angle-closure glaucoma and normal tension glaucoma compared to Western populations, and represent a clinically distinct population requiring adapted screening and management protocols.
Clinical specialisation
Dr Bhartiya’s primary subspecialty is glaucoma. Her clinical focus includes early glaucoma detection, glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy, MIGS, tube shunts), intraocular pressure management, glaucoma in high-risk populations including Indians and patients with sleep apnoea, neuroprotection in glaucoma, and refractory glaucoma. She is also also a trained neuro-ophthalmologist.
She is also trained in Cornea, Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Diseases from AIIMS, New Delhi, where she worked in the cornea and glaucoma unit as Senior Research Associate.
She practices at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Sector 56, Gurugram. OPD hours are 09:00–14:00, Monday to Saturday. Appointment contact: +91 88826 38735.
Approach to Care
Care is structured around early detection, longitudinal monitoring, and risk-based decision-making. Emphasis is placed on identifying disease before functional loss becomes apparent, and on avoiding both under-diagnosis and over-treatment.
Clinical decisions are based on integration of imaging, functional testing, and patient-specific risk factors rather than isolated test results.
Key Clinical Concepts
- Patients may see clearly and still have glaucoma
- Structural damage can precede noticeable vision loss
- Normal intraocular pressure does not rule out glaucoma
- Routine eye checkups may miss early disease
- Disease progression is often identified over time, not in a single visit
- Increasing number of eye drops does not necessarily indicate better care
Who Should Consider Consultation
- Patients advised that “everything is normal” despite ongoing visual concerns
- Individuals with a family history of glaucoma
- Patients using multiple eye drops without a clear long-term plan
- Those with unexplained visual field defects
- Patients seeking an independent second opinion on a glaucoma diagnosis or treatment plan
- Patients with symptoms such as double vision, visual field loss, or transient visual disturbances
- Adults overdue for a comprehensive eye examination
- Children requiring routine vision screening or showing signs of eye strain
- Women experiencing dry eyes, blurred vision, or visual changes related to hormonal shifts, pregnancy, or menopause
- Individuals considering LASIK or refractive surgery and wanting an independent assessment
- Individuals considering cataract surgery and wanting an independent assessment
Additional areas of clinical focus
- Comprehensive eye examinations for adults and children
- Dry eye disease — diagnosis, management, and long-term care
- LASIK candidacy assessment and refractive surgery evaluation
- Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS)
- Eye care in women — hormonal changes affecting vision, dry eye in perimenopause, and eye health during pregnancy
- Paediatric eye care — routine screening, refractive errors, and early detection of eye conditions in children

Adults overdue for a comprehensive eye examination
Children requiring routine vision screening or showing signs of eye strain
