Vision Unlimited Community Eye Health and School Vision Programs have helped the underserved communities in urban slums of Gurgaon tremendously. The goal is of the program is make sure that preventable vision problems do not limit learning in children, or decrease productivity, or independence for older adults.
Vision as a Foundation for Learning and Independence
One of the most powerful yet underestimated determinants of human potential is Clear vision. For children, good vision is essential for reading from the blackboard, writing accurately, maintaining attention in class, and participating confidently in school activities. For adults, especially after the age of 40, near vision determines productivity, independence, and quality of life.
Yet millions of people live with untreated vision problems that are simple to diagnose and correct.
Vision Unlimited, a not for profit organisation works in the urban slums of Gurgaon, addresses this gap through community-based eye care programs, focusing on early detection, access to vision correction, and public awareness about eye health.
What is Vision Unlimited?
Vision Unlimited is a community initiative founded by Dr Shibal Bhartiya, glaucoma specialist and clinician-researcher, to provide a safe space for children to learn, grow and thrive in urban slums of Gurgaon. At present, Vision Unlimited runs six After School Clubs, taking care of the educational, nutritional and health related needs of more than 1400 children. Vision Unlimited Community Eye Health Program aims to expand access to eye care beyond the clinic for underserved populations.
The program focuses on:
- Early detection of vision problems in children
- Community-based screening programs
- Access to refraction and clinical assessment
- Immediate provision of spectacles where required
- Eye health awareness and referral for further care
The goal is simple: to ensure that preventable vision problems do not limit learning, productivity, or independence.
Community Vision Screening Programs
Vision Unlimited conducts school-based and community-based eye screening programs across Gurgaon and surrounding areas.
These programs bring eye care directly to communities where access to routine eye examinations may be limited.
Key activities include:
- On-site vision screening
- Refraction and clinical assessment
- Identification of refractive errors and other ocular conditions
- Immediate provision of spectacles when needed
- Referral for further ophthalmic care
By bringing screening programs into schools and communities, the initiative helps identify vision problems early, when intervention can have the greatest impact.
Impact of the Vision Unlimited Programs

The Vision Unlimited initiative has already reached thousands of individuals through community eye health programs.
Recent program annual impact (from November 2025 to November 2026) includes:
- 13,668 children screened through school eye screening programs
- 10,452 children from NGO-supported and low-fee schools
- 3,216 children from private schools
- 5,000+ adults examined through community eye camps
- 3,700 presbyopia spectacles distributed to restore near vision in those over 40
Vision Unlimited Community Eye Health efforts focus deliberately on communities with the greatest unmet needs. This ensures that access to vision care is not limited by economic barriers.
Why Early Vision Screening Matters
Many vision problems in children go unnoticed. Children often adapt to poor vision without realising that their sight is impaired.
Uncorrected refractive errors can lead to:
- difficulty reading from the board
- poor academic performance
- reduced classroom participation
- headaches and eye strain
- long-term educational disadvantage
Early screening allows these problems to be identified. Something as simple as a pair of glasses can correct vision.
Vision Care Across the Life Course
The Vision Unlimited model addresses vision needs across different stages of life.
Children
School screening programs detect refractive errors early and support better educational outcomes.
Older Adults
Community eye camps help identify presbyopia and other common vision problems that affect independence and daily activities such as reading, sewing, or using mobile phones.
By addressing both childhood vision and age-related near-vision loss, the program supports functional vision across the life course.
Community Partnerships
Vision Unlimited works with schools, NGOs, and community organisations to expand access to eye care services. These partnerships make it possible to reach populations that might otherwise have limited access to regular eye examinations.
The program continues to grow through collaborations with educators, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and community leaders who share the goal of improving vision health.
